The National Road Safety Board (NRSB) is India’s national statutory advisory body for road safety. It was constituted by the Central Government under Section 215B(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 — the provision introduced through the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 — and functions under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India.
The Board was created to give India a dedicated, expert institution focused solely on road safety: a permanent body that can advise Government on standards, technology, data, capacity building, trauma care and coordination, and hold the road-safety agenda together across ministries and States.
The Board brings together senior officials from the Central and State Governments, highway and police agencies, and independent experts from transport administration, enforcement, road engineering, public health, trauma care and road-safety advocacy. It advises both the Central and State Governments and works to strengthen the institutional machinery for road safety across the country.
Our approach: the Safe System
The Board’s remit spans the entire Safe System: safer road users, safer roads, safer speeds and safer vehicles, together with effective post-crash care, underpinned throughout by reliable data and continuous learning. The overarching purpose is to reduce road crash deaths and serious injuries in India and to build institutions capable of sustaining that reduction.
