In broad terms, the Board advises the Central and State Governments on all aspects of road safety and traffic management, and promotes good practice, standards and coordination. Its functions include:
Advising on standards for road safety, traffic management and the construction of roads, including roads in hilly and difficult terrain.
Promoting the adoption of new vehicle-safety technology and innovation, and advising on vehicle-safety standards.
Advising on the design, construction and maintenance of national highways and other roads to make them safer for all road users.
Framing guidelines for capacity building and skill development of traffic police, highway authorities, hospital and para-medical staff, and educational and research institutions engaged in road safety.
Advising on the establishment and operation of trauma-care facilities and para-medical facilities for the treatment of road-crash victims, and on emergency medical response.
Promoting a national road-safety information system — the systematic collection, analysis and use of crash and safety data.
Promoting road-safety education, awareness and behaviour change among all road users.
Advising on enforcement strategies and the use of technology in traffic regulation and enforcement.
Strengthening coordination between the Central Government, State Governments and their agencies on crash prevention and post-crash response.
