Standards & guidelines
Reviewing and recommending standards for road design, traffic management, work-zone safety and vehicle safety, aligned with Indian codes and leading international practice.
Data & research
Building towards a national road-safety information system: better crash data, common definitions, analysis and an evidence base for decisions.
Trauma & emergency care
Advising on strengthening the post-crash “chain of survival” — emergency response, trauma care and rehabilitation.
Capacity building
Guidelines and programmes to build the skills of traffic police, highway engineers and medical responders.
Technology & innovation
Promoting proven safety technologies in vehicles, enforcement and highway management.
Centre–State coordination
Convening States and agencies, sharing good practice, and supporting State road-safety institutions.
Public awareness
Supporting evidence-based road-safety communication and behaviour-change efforts.
Monitoring & evaluation
Tracking progress against road-safety targets and reporting transparently.
Six thematic Working Groups
To operationalise its mandate, the Board has constituted six thematic Working Groups. Working Group 4 — Data, Crash Investigation, Research and Innovation — is co-chaired by Shri Harsh A. Poddar, IPS, and Shri Piyush Tewari; its mandate covers crash learning, data integration, the Road Safety Observatory, artificial intelligence, research, and a national road safety performance index.
National AI & Road Safety Study
A national framework and phased roadmap for the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in road safety — from predictive black-spot identification and computer-vision road audits to enforcement and post-crash response.
Data Integration & National Observatory
An interoperable national road-safety data architecture and a National Road Safety Observatory as the authoritative source of harmonised data and analysis.
National Crash Investigation Framework
A standardised crash investigation framework and a network of multidisciplinary investigation units whose findings feed a continuous national learning loop.
National Road Safety Performance Index
A transparent index benchmarking States, districts and corridors on Safe System indicators — directing attention, resources and healthy competition where they are most needed.
